Because I am capable," Card said to the New York State Police officers. He appeared thinner than normal, his fellow reservists said. An earlier report by state police indicated he had threatened fellow reservists. But New York State Police said in a statement that he was never in custody. Card was driven to Keller Army Hospital for evaluation by fellow reservists, and troopers followed the private vehicle.

NEW YORK (AP) — A new, higher-dose nasal spray for reversing opioid overdoses did not save more lives than the previous standard dose, but it did cause more vomiting and other side effects, researchers wrote in a study published Thursday. Three troops in eastern New York were given 8-milligram sprays. The study results were based on 354 instances in which troopers administered naloxone sprays from late March 2022 to mid-August 2023. But so too did those treated with the 8-milligram sprays, who got 1.58 doses, or 12.6 milligrams, on average. But other problems were significantly more common in the patients who got the higher-dose sprays.

That’s when police say Card was committed to a mental health facility for two weeks after acting erratically and “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” a military base. State Police troopers took Card, a sergeant 1st class, to the Keller Army Community Hospital at West Point for what would be two weeks of mental health evaluation. What New York State Police did about Card’s threats is unclear. “Just because there appears to be a mental health nexus to this scenario, the vast majority of people with mental health diagnosis will never hurt anybody,” Sauschuck said. She said someone dropped the ball because Card’s threats and medical evaluation should have triggered a yellow flag seizure of his guns when he returned home.

CNN —A 20-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday after she and three others accidentally turned into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend’s house in rural upstate New York, authorities said. A bail hearing is pending for Tuesday or Wednesday, the district attorney and defense attorney both said. He said witness accounts from inside the cars and forensics prove the shots were fired as the group exited the driveway. Murphy, the sheriff, said he was a friend of the victim’s family and lamented the killing. Over $50,000 has been raised for Gillis’ family in a GoFundMe raising money for the “Gillis family for use toward Kaylin’s funeral expenses and any immediate financial needs,” according to the page.
Police said there was no immediate indication of a motive for the attack that left Rushdie severely injured and on a ventilator after surgery. "I'm not aware that he's ever asked us to provide additional security, and I'm also not aware that he ever brought a security detail with him," she said. Pilar Pintagro/via REUTERSFor Rushdie's event, Chautauqua had requested and received security assistance from the New York State Police and the Chautauqua County sheriff's department, Hill said. Fisher said safety, diversity and differences of opinion had long been part of the fabric of the Chautauqua community. "Not only was he (Rushdie) a victim, but I think that open community is going to be a victim as well," Fisher said.
